Irlanda ha entrado en celebración nacional con el mayor festival dentro de la Isla Esmeralda conmemorando el Día de San Patricio, patrono de Irlanda y quien introdujo el cristianismo a la Isla, pero ¿sabías que México e Irlanda guardan un lazo muy importante dentro de la historia de México?
Yo no sabía nada de esto hasta que me tocó vivir un St. Patrick´s day en la capital irlandesa y dentro de las festividades de esta fecha organizan un desfile, fue ahí donde me toco ver la bandera de México ondeando dentro del desfile y con una gran pancarta que decía “Banda de Gaitas del Batallón de San Patricio” me emocioné mucho al ver eso y más al leerlo en español—ya que el idioma oficial es el inglés— detrás de ello les secundaba un grupo de personas con gaitas y tambores, vistiendo faldas escocesas 😱 .
Después de esto me puse a investigar un poco y descubrí que existe una parte en la historia en la Intervención Estadounidense en México, en donde un grupo de desertores—en su mayoría irlandeses— del ejercito contrario se unieron a las filas enemigas y lucharon como aliados de para defender suelo mexicano.
Se dice que fue la primera ocasión en la que el ejercito de Estados Unidos contó con tantas bajas, unos registran 800 soldados y otros registros hablan de 300. Además se cuenta que los desertores fueron capturados y se les marcó en la frente una letra “D” de “Desertores” con un metal incandescente, además de que muchos de ellos fueron ahorcados.
La historia cuenta que este pequeño grupo de desertores decidieron unirse al bando enemigo debido a que eran tratados de muy mala manera, ya que causaban desconfianza dentro de los mandos militares estadounidenses, puesto que la religión de estos soldados irlandeses era la católica y por lo tanto más cercanos a la causa mexicana, y pues no se equivocaron😏 .
El 21 de septiembre de 1846 el Batallón de San Patricio al mando de John O´Reilly, anteriormente teniente del Ejercito de Estados Unidos e inmigrante irlandés, ayudaron a detener 2 asaltos por parte de filas enemigas en Monterrey, también sofocaron un batallón atacante y capturaron 2 cañones estadounidenses en la ciudad de Saltillo. Como unidad de infantería, se distinguieron en la Batalla de Churubusco en 1847 al lado de los batallones Independencia y Bravo.
¿Cómo recordamos a estos soldados?
- En México se les conmemoró nombrando una calle como Mártires Irlandeses, frente al convento San Diego de Churubusco. De igual forma se les recuerda en varias escuelas, iglesias y monumentos.
- El Batallón de San Patricio es conmemorado en dos diferentes días en México: el primero el 12 de septiembre, el aniversario de las primeras ejecuciones, y el otro el 17 de marzo, día de San Patricio. Hay un monumento dedicado a ellos en la Plaza San Jacinto, en el que se dispuso una placa conmemorativa del Batallón de San Patricio.
- En la sala principal de la Cámara de Diputados de México, el nombre del Batallón de San Patricio está inscrito con letras de oro al lado de muchos otros héroes mexicanos.
- El gobierno mexicano donó una estatua al pueblo de Irlanda como agradecimiento por el Batallón de San Patricio. Esta estatua fue colocada en el condado de Galway, en Irlanda. Todos los 12 de septiembre también se recuerda al Batallón en este pueblo, ondeando la bandera mexicana.
- Existe un monumento en la iglesia de Tlacopac, cerca de San Ángel en la Ciudad de México. Consiste en una cruz celta con una placa conmemorativa en la peana, que menciona que varios de los soldados irlandeses ejecutados recibieron sepultura en el atrio.
Como dato les digo que existe una película llamada Héroes sin patria (One Man´s Hero) que narra esta parte importante dentro de la historia mexicana.
